New Year Blog

So we’re now well into January but I still have a hangover as memories of New Year’s Eve are still in my mind (and my body!). The only place to be as the clock struck midnight was in the Tally Ho in New Street where the legendary Sean Hussey has been ringing in the New Year for almost thirty years now. The countdown was electric and the atmosphere was infectious – the revellers were out in force. All around us there were embraces, kisses and renditions of auld lang syne…hey, even John Duignan enjoyed a sneaky dance with Assumpta – love was in the air..!

In 2013, we said goodbye to the inspirational Kerry teenager Donal Walsh and to the world famous Nelson Mandela while closer to home, Longford said Goodbye to one of Ireland’s oldest citizens and one of it’s own, 107 year old Margaret Mitchell, a native of Aughnacliffe, who was born in 1906 and emigrated to America where she even took up employment in the acclaimed Plaza Hotel in New York prior before becoming a nurse and returning back home to marry a Leitrim man.

Golfer Rory Mc IIroy and tennis player Caroline Wozniacki rang in the New Year with a bang when he ‘put a ring on it’ while there’s good news closer to home with hopes of a new hotel for Longford amid news that there is a developer interested in the current vacant town centre beside Longford cinema– this after a highly successful year which saw the arrival of Iceland, Shaws, Mr. Price and Costa Coffee to the region– all in the town which brings you Herterich’s Artisan Meats – selling the very best in locally produced meats and vegetables.

Herterich’s has a long and chequered history – back in 1952 when the classic film ‘The Quiet Man’ was being made in Cong in the West of Ireland, Hollywood was on it’s way in the form of actor John Wayne – and he was hungry! His first port of call? Herterich’s Artisan Meats of course…..a moment in history – and he was not disappointed!

Things have changed now of course but the reputation of Herterich’s Artisan Meats in Ballymahon Street in Longford has not and, as the students of the Convent of Mercy and St. Mel’s College reluctantly settled back to school after the festive season, they queued up in their droves for their breakfast rolls at 8a.m. here in Herterichs (as performed by legendary comedian Pat Shortt of D’Unbelievables in the classic Jumbo Breakfast Roll song - but I disgress)…where else would they get their rolls filled with bacon, sausage, egg, pudding hash brown and the rest ……….the perfect way to start 2014!
