A family butcher on Ballymahon Street since 1956

Louis Herterich Snr and his wife Teresa opened this shop in September 1956. The family had come to Ireland from southern Germany, and Louis's father George had opened the first Herterich pork butcher's in Naas in 1912 — so the trade arrived here with the family, and it has been on Ballymahon Street ever since.

In the early years Louis bought pigs himself, house to house and village to village, cycling as far as fifty miles in a day to find animals finished well enough to be worth using. The premises grew twice: a major expansion in 1982, and a full rebuild in 1999 in which everything was knocked except the front façade, whose original stonework was cleaned and kept. Louis Jnr, who apprenticed to his father for over a dozen years, runs the business today with his wife Caroline.

Where our meat actually comes from

Most butchers say "locally sourced". Here is what it means for us specifically:

• Beef and lamb — Rawles, our carcass supplier, based in Ballinalee. Fifteen minutes from our door.
• Pork — Green Pastures Meats.
• Poultry — Hogan's Farm.

Carcass beef and lamb come in whole and are broken down by our own butchers on the premises. Our sausages, black and white puddings, bacon, hams and spiced beef are all made here rather than bought in. Food handling across raw and cooked production runs under HACCP monitoring with lab sampling.

What you can do in the shop

• Buy over the counter. Everything is cut to order. Tell us the joint weight, the thickness of the chops, or what you're cooking, and we'll cut for it.
• Collect an online order. Choose store pickup at checkout and collect here — no delivery charge, and no need to be home for a courier.
• Order for an occasion. Christmas turkeys and hams, party trays, catering and BBQ orders. Ring ahead for anything substantial.
• Ask. If you don't know which cut suits what you're making, that's what the person behind the counter is for.

We're on Ballymahon Street in the centre of Longford town, a few minutes' walk from the main shopping streets, with parking nearby. Eircode N39 D2C4 will bring you to the door.
