Garth Brooks Hysteria

He may have ‘Friends in Low Places’ but Garth Brooks has friends in high places too – Longford for one I think, as I view the loyal queue of fans waiting patiently outside Longford’s Music Centre to secure their tickets for one of three long anticipated gigs in Croke Park later this year. The excitement is infectious and as they recover from two days – and nights – of lengthy queuing in the bitter cold, where else do they come to warm up their cold weary bodies but the centrally located Herterich’s Artisan Meats Store on nearby Ballymahon Street where they can choose from hot coffee, mocha, cappuccino, a full Irish breakfast featuring Herterich’s legendary sausages or simply a cup of steaming tea – perfect to celebrate their feat and share their success!

In Longford news I see that 29 jobs are to go at the Abbott Diagnostics plant – The international medical diagnostics company announced 78 voluntary redundancies between its various branches recently.

Meanwhile former Longford Fianna Fail stalwart Mary Lillis from Drumlish alleged that the majority of females making it to the higher ranks of the party are the children or close relatives of former Oireachtas members! Lillis herself
resigned from the Fianna Fail National Executive and will run as an independent candidate in this year’s local elections.

She expressed the view that there is not enough support for women in politics and that the only women being promoted in FF those with strong political links. Controversial views? You decide…

But back to Herterich’s famous sausages – succulent and tasty – did you know

there are actually eight different specialities available?

Traditional Pork,
Beef,
Honey and Mustard,
Pork and Apple,
Sinless,
Cocktail and
Thick Sausages. There are also ‘sinless sausages’, made with couscos and 100% lean pork.

The industry of making small-batch, all-natural, artisanal sausage in the butcher shop is not new – before modern mass manufacturing techniques became widespread, all sausages were made in small batches with completely natural meat ingredients herbs, spices and casings. Herterich’s are proud to say that all their sausage recipes have been handed down through generations and remain true to this traditional methodology.

And you can actually pre order a batch of sausages, using your very own recipe! Herterich’s invite you to fill out a recipe form and for a minimum order of 5kg will manufacture your batch, even offering you a choice of skin type – and ensuring that your secret recipe stays secret as it should be!!

If you would like Herterich’s to make any international variety for you, just drop them a line at info@herterichartisanmeats.ie Subject to a minimum order of 5kgs they would bedelighted to manufacture for you.

Here at Herterich’s Artisan Meats 40 Ballymahon Street Longford some of the best treats of the week include their second Wholesale Sunday on this Sunday March 9th with quality meats at crazy prices.

Valentines Blog

Roses are red

Violets are blue

It’s all happening in Herterich’s

For me and you

There may be wind, rain and snowstorms on the way but love is in the air and cupid himself is busily at work in Ballymahon Street Longford where master butcher Louis and his merry men have been busy preparing a special range of treats and exclusive offers for you and your loved one as today is February 14th – Valentines Day.

So forget queuing up in a busy restaurant for a table to celebrate – why not buy some of the best locally produced meat of your choice in town in Herterich’s, cook it slowly to your heart’s content, put some romantic music on, turn the lights down low, open a bottle of Herterich’s Artisan Meat’s finest wine and enjoy a home made meal for two at home – with just your sweetheart for company? What more could you want?

In other news it’s been a sad time in Longford over the past few weeks with the town mourning the loss of one of its most popular businessmen -Berney Crossan, proprietor of Crossan’s Electrical Store in Main Street for forty years.

Originally from Ardrum, Ballinamore, County Leitrim, Berney was a familiar sight in the popular store for all that time and was always kind and courteous with the that personal touch when it came to dealing with his customers. More than that, he was a gentleman.

Berney was very much involved in the local community including Longford Chamber of Commerce and was a keen lover of sport. He had suffered ill health for the past number of months and sadly passed away recently.

Longford also lost former County Manager Michael Killeen, another man of great stature who will be greatly missed. Michael was County Manager in Longford from 1977 until 2006 and was one of the longest-serving managers in the country.

Scouring the papers I see, as I enjoy a pew in Herterich’s Artisan Meats Store, we’ve all enjoyed great nights out at the wonderful Backstage Theatre but that could be at risk as recently General Manager Mona Considine called on Longford County Council to find more funding to support the much loved local facility in the future, pointing out that a policy of cuts in funding by the Arts Council over the past six years has led to serious concerns about it’s future.

The Backstage Theatre, she claims, costs some half a million euro to run on an annual basis, but receives just €130,000 euro from the Arts Council this year, and €50,000 from Longford County Council.

More doom and gloom I think – but thank God things only get better and better in Herterich’s Ballymahon Street Longford who have just enjoyed a hugely successfulWholesale Sale last Sunday which saw plenty of treats and the finest locally produced food available at great prices!

February Blog

February has got off to a frosty start in Longford but it’s warm in Herterich’s Artisan Meats Store in Ballymahon Street Longford and I note that work is progressing well on the restoration of St. Mel’s Cathedral. Joining the hard working team on this massive restoration project is young Longford plasterer Tina Brogan who will be able to say in later years that she worked on one “of the biggest restoration projects in Europe”.

When the Longford Arms closed it’s doors rumours were rife that it had closed for good but legendary funny man and popular Dubliner Brendan Grace reopened it (albeit for one night only!) until it opened it’s doors for good a few days later, bringing a little laughter and joy into a community who are just returning to work and school after the festive season.

But the biggest news for Longford – and especially for the Nolan family – has been that young Larry turned 100 years of age on Thursday 16th January. Always courteous and fiercely independent, he can be seen strolling down the town every day going down his business, always pausing  to have a word or two with his friends and neighbours and having a spot of lunch with his son Paddy. He loves to banter and talk about sport and times gone by. Modest and unassuming, he has taken his birthday celebrations in his stride and all in Longford are delighted to see him in good health and reach his milestone birthday. One of Herterich’s Artisan Meat’s most loyal customers, the atmosphere in Larry’s house in Chapel Street (where he has been resident for almost seventy years) last week was electric and the man himself was revelling in the celebrations. There were cards and presents everywhere and a relaxed and modest birthday boy was lapping up the attention as grandchildren and great grandchildren visited in quick succession to offer their congratulations! “I won’t bother having a drink today,” he told me “and you should give up them ‘oul fags!” he jokingly scolded me. (A cigarette has never passed my lips!) and anyway “I want to live as long as you!” I told the man who has enjoyed a long and chequered career as a builder, a general operative with Longford County Council and fireman. Even the construction workers on St. Mel’s Cathedral got in on the act with a huge billboard on the roof of the iconic building  declaring “Happy 100th Larry!”

In other news it reaches us that Carrigglass Manor has been sold to a mystery buyer while Leitrim twins Bridget and Margaret Reynolds, who have made their home in Longford, were challenged by the weird and wonderful ways of magician Keith Barry on his new TV show ‘Brain Hacker’ – an unforgettable and wonderful day says Bridget – though she remains sceptical!

It’s warm and cosy here in Herterich’s Artisan Meats Store and the shop is full of customers. Best of all they’ve just launched their new face book page – be sure to befriend it. There you’ll find everything from step by step videos showing you how to prepare your family meat to treats of the week.

Exciting times are in store too with the looming of a big day – on Sunday February 9thHerterich’s will open it’s doors to the public and hold an inaugural Wholesale Sale, with exceptional value to be had, unrivalled anywhere in town! There will be plenty of treats and the finest locally produced food available - so be sure to pop in.

New Year Blog

New Year Blog

So we’re now well into January but I still have a hangover as memories of New Year’s Eve are still in my mind (and my body!). The only place to be as the clock struck midnight was in the Tally Ho in New Street where the legendary Sean Hussey has been ringing in the New Year for almost thirty years now. The countdown was electric and the atmosphere was infectious – the revellers were out in force. All around us there were embraces, kisses and renditions of auld lang syne…hey, even John Duignan enjoyed a sneaky dance with Assumpta – love was in the air..!

In 2013, we said goodbye to the inspirational Kerry teenager Donal Walsh and to the world famous Nelson Mandela while closer to home, Longford said Goodbye to one of Ireland’s oldest citizens and one of it’s own, 107 year old Margaret Mitchell, a native of Aughnacliffe, who was born in 1906 and emigrated to America where she even took up employment in the acclaimed Plaza Hotel in New York prior before becoming a nurse and returning back home to marry a Leitrim man.

Golfer Rory Mc IIroy and tennis player Caroline Wozniacki rang in the New Year with a bang when he ‘put a ring on it’ while there’s good news closer to home with hopes of a new hotel for Longford amid news that there is a developer interested in the current vacant town centre beside Longford cinema– this after a highly successful year which saw the arrival of Iceland, Shaws, Mr. Price and Costa Coffee to the region– all in the town which brings you Herterich’s Artisan Meats – selling the very best in locally produced meats and vegetables.

Herterich’s has a long and chequered history – back in 1952 when the classic film ‘The Quiet Man’ was being made in Cong in the West of Ireland, Hollywood was on it’s way in the form of actor John Wayne – and he was hungry! His first port of call? Herterich’s Artisan Meats of course…..a moment in history – and he was not disappointed!

Things have changed now of course but the reputation of Herterich’s Artisan Meats in Ballymahon Street in Longford has not and, as the students of the Convent of Mercy and St. Mel’s College reluctantly settled back to school after the festive season, they queued up in their droves for their breakfast rolls at 8a.m. here in Herterichs (as performed by legendary comedian Pat Shortt of D’Unbelievables in the classic Jumbo Breakfast Roll song - but I disgress)…where else would they get their rolls filled with bacon, sausage, egg, pudding hash brown and the rest ……….the perfect way to start 2014!
